Yesterday Greg spoke in a virtual debate hosted by the House of Commons Petitions Committee, following a petition that 418 Buckingham constituency residents signed, relating to the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday that runs out on 31st March.
Greg has always believed Stamp Duty to be a particularly unfair tax, which essentially taxes aspiration and acts as a disincentive for people to move up or down the housing ladder as their circumstances need.
Commenting, Greg said. "My first argument is that this tax needs a radical overhaul. However in the short term, the 31st March cliff edge of the current SDLT holiday for people buying homes up to £500,000, is causing a great deal of concern for many (and let's not forget moving home is one of the most stressful things anyone can do) and causing serious disruption in the market. We really need, at the very least, this holiday extending to ensure everyone mid-transaction - but who may miss the harsh 31st March cut off - is still able to enjoy this scheme."
