In Treasury Questions on 22nd June 2021, Greg Smith MP put it to Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak that in order to bring employees back to work from furlough, business needs absolute certainty as to when restrictions will actually be lifted. Greg cited the example of businesses in the events sector supply chain, who have raised with him the problem of multiple enquiries for jobs later in the summer and autumn, but customers too nervous to pay deposits for fear of restrictions being extended and planned events needing to be cancelled. Greg argued restrictions must be lifted by 19th July at the latest to protect jobs and was pleased the Chancellor agreed, saying "the only sustainable way to protect those jobs is to reopen the economy so that people can return to work and provide for their families, and move on to bright new opportunities."
