In December Greg met with George Morris of Morris of Hoggeston to discuss a number of issues affecting farming. Joining us was a representative of Jordans, well known for their breakfast cereal ranges.
An issue of concern that came up was the impact on breakfast cereals - and in turn our cereal growers - from the governments current drive to restrict promotions of products high in fat, salt and sugar. The inclusion of products such as granola, muesli and porridge in the proposed restrictions is particularly perverse given the fat and sugar content of many of these is from naturally occurring fats from nuts and naturally occurring sugars from dried fruits that are put in these products. There is equally considerable research that shows many breakfast cereals are a healthy option.
This morning (21st January 2021) Greg challenged the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on this, urging him to work with the Department of Health to ensure breakfast cereals are treated with greater common sense.
Greg will continue to push on this with Defra and the Department of Health on behalf of our local farmers and food producers.
