In the Transport Select Committee at the House of Commons, Greg has often spoken about the need to focus on the emerging technologies around "cleaner" cars, mostly focusing on the hydrogen fuel cell. Having heard his comments, the good folk at Enterprise lent him a Toyota Mirai for the weekend, which he tested by taking it to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and back.
Greg said: "There is undoubtedly a lot of polishing to do with this technology. The car was entirely lacking in power, but it worked and handled well. And the big difference being that when a hydrogen fuel cell car is empty you can just stick a nozzle in a hole and it is full again in under five minutes. Battery electric cars are clearly in the lead at the moment, but I think it is always important to challenge assumptions, as we dig up the country all over again to install the charging infrastructure, as to whether battery electric really is the long term solution to cleaner car travel. As the tech develops, hydrogen could well become the VHS to battery electrics Betamax."
