The situation in Ukraine is deeply distressing and we are all appalled by the actions of President Putin’s regime in Ukraine.
Greg said: "I welcome that the Government has announced a plan for bespoke humanitarian support for the people of Ukraine.
"The Home Office is prioritising the provision of support to resident British nationals and their families who want to leave Ukraine to come to the UK, and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) staff are working around the clock to process visa applications.
"Whilst this vital work continues, it is important that essential security and biometrics checks, which are a fundamental part of our visa approval process at all Visa Application Centres worldwide, take place, albeit at an accelerated pace. There are real risks of possible Russian infiltration in this country if checks are not sufficiently rigorous. The Government has a duty to protect the security of the UK and the safety of its citizens.
"I made this point to the Home Secretary today and I was reassured that the security of British citizens remains an absolute priority and the necessary security checks will remain in place."
