Following Greg Smith MPs meeting with representatives from the road freight sector yesterday, which was focussed on the growing problem of theft from lorries in overnight parking areas, at Transport Questions this morning the Buckingham MP asked the Roads Minister what action the government is taking to ensure there are safe overnight parking areas for HGV drivers. This is important not just to combat the economic damage theft from lorries causes, but also for driver retention and road safety, with many drivers reporting poor sleep due to fear of being robbed in the night as they sleep in their cabs.
